New Delhi: A three-day international conference on unravelling the mysteries of Sufism began here Saturday amid soulful singing and expositions by erudite scholars.
Shanti Hiranand, a devotee of the legendary ghazal queen Begum Akhtar, set the tone by singing melodiously of "Mein to Piya Se Nayana Lagaun" (I look in the eyes of my beloved/god), kindling in the audience a thirst for the divine and a communion with the humanity.
"Sufism is the song of humanity. It is the song of the soul and hope of the future," former prime minister V.P. Singh told the nearly 100-strong audience at the India International Centre.
Around 70 scholars, thinkers and seekers from 14 countries are participating in this conference - perhaps the first of its kind on this subject in India - organised by The Foundation of SAARC Writers and Literature, founded by the irrepressible Punjabi writer Ajeet Cour.
Besides participants from South Asia, scholars from Iran, Lebanon, Turkey, Uzebekistan, France, the US, Canada and Italy are attending the conference.
"It strips us of all pretences and puts us face to face with our creator not in awe but in a sea of love and compassion," said Singh, who despite being ill, came to inaugurate the conference due to his passion for "the Sufi way of life."
"The conference will bring hearts and minds of people closer," said a beaming Cour.
"When you dance, you come closer to god. Sufism offers an experience of ecstasy and joy in love of god," Abid Hussain, former ambassador to the US, said as he spoke about the liberating force of Sufi teachings.
"It's a spiritual force which is more powerful than all the material things in the world.
"Distortion of religion has confused and misguided many people. Sufism offers the way out," said Hussain.
